Shelties also do not take well to strangers, letting very little if any approach or touch them, they can be known to bark excessively. They are a good guard dog but socialisation as a puppy is a must and raising in a house with companionship is preferred to get the best from this breed.
Due to its herding nature, if allowed near a road, the Shetland Sheepdog may be inclined to chase a care or anything that may be blown down the road or pavements. Shelties are considered a great companion for elderly because of its natural kindness, the male of the breed is said to be far more affectionate than the female.
